Different Ways To Treat Phobias

As the most common anxiety disorder, it?s surprising how little we know about phobias. Phobias develop because of irrational fears about people, objects, animals or situations. Some phobias can be traced back to childhood, but there is no clear stage in life that phobias are more likely to begin.

There are three main types of phobias: Agoraphobias are a generalized fear about leaving ones home or a place where they feel safe. Specific phobias are phobias of objects, animals, insects, etc. Social phobias are phobias about being among other people. Being embarrassed by the scrutiny of others is a primary driver for social phobias.

There are a variety of ways to treat phobias. Many treatments involve some level of exposure therapy, which works by repeatedly exposing the person to their fear trigger and desensitizing them. Some therapists use the technology of virtual reality for this type of therapy.

Cognitive behavioral theory teaches the phobic to analyze their phobic thoughts and develop solutions. This type of treatment often involves the phobic proceeding through a series of steps. As the phobic learns to manage their anxiety at each step, they proceed to the next.

Hypnotherapy and neuro-linguistic therapy are also ways to treat phobias. None of these therapy treatments have been scientifically proven, but individual case studies of their effectiveness abound.

Phobias are all around us, though the appropriate terms may not be used. Though the reasons for the phobia are often imagined, their effects are very real.

Treatment for phobias does work, though the individual may have to try a few techniques before they find the one best suited for them. Many phobias, especially specific phobias are deep rooted and take time to change.

Phobias are treatable, provided the phobic is ready and willing to go through treatment. Phobics know their fears are irrational and unfounded, but facing them is a completely different story. Some phobic?s may be able to self treat while others will require the expertise and guidance of a licensed professional.
