How I Dealt with Anxiety Attacks

Whenever I hit my mid-20s, I began to experience my first round of anxiety attacks. Both of my parents had had anxiety attacks for the majority of their lives and I always knew that there was a possibility that I was going to have them as well. Whenever I hit my 20s, I thought that I was pretty much in the clear but as it turns out, they were waiting on the inside of me and they begin to show themselves during that time.

Whenever I first experienced an anxiety attack, it hit me a bit unexpectedly. The feelings that washed over me whenever I have the anxiety were so unusual that I didn’t recognize them as being an anxiety attack at first. It started as a classic pain in my chest, almost as if I was having a heart attack or feeling as though I had severe heartburn. It took a few hours for the anxiety to calm down and during that time, I suffered from everything from cold sweats to a feeling as if I was going to lose control.

It was surprising, because I had always thought that I would have anxiety attack someday and I kept it in the back of my mind so that I wasn’t taken by surprise such as this but it was difficult for me to imagine what was going on whenever I was in the middle of it. You’ve probably felt similar, especially whenever you first begin to experience anxiety and panic attacks regularly. There are times whenever it may make you feel as if you have a very serious health problem but if you are able to get yourself beyond these initial feelings, you may be able to face the problem and deal with it successfully.

The unfortunate thing is, most people who have anxiety attacks tend to attack them back, thinking as though they can fight their way through them and overcome them quickly. The exact opposite is often the case and the majority of people who fight their way through an anxiety attack in this way only end up feeling as if they are worn out and unable to take any more. There’s no doubt that you probably felt this way from time to time as well.

Here is a little secret that I learned along the way and one that made all the difference in how I was able to overcome and deal with my panic attacks. Instead of fighting directly through the center of the attack, I began to simply ride on top of it as if I were riding on a wave on the ocean. Imagine trying to turn the tide of one of the large waves that you see out on the ocean, it would be impossible for you to affect it even a little bit. If you can resist that initial urge that the anxiety gives you to fight or run, you may be able to stay on top of it and allow it to wash underneath you.

As it turns out, it was the best thing that I ever did and my anxiety not only lasted a shorter amount of time with each attack, I actually began to notice that the attacks were coming less and less often. If you’re able to do this for yourself, and to resist the urge of fighting the anxiety that is coming over you, you may just be able to deal with them in this way as well.
