Overcoming Panic Attacks
Panic attack: What does it mean and what are its causes? How do you overcome panic attacks?
What is Panic Attack?
When our brain perceives a threat although none is evident, it sends out threat signals to our body. Such threat signals will trigger anxiety and fear, thus, a panic attack occurs. It is a psychological thing that can suddenly happen for no apparent reason. Help will definitely be needed to combat panic attacks, particularly when these attacks occur intensely and in repeated episodes.
What are its Symptoms?
Shortness of breath, heart palpitations, shaking or trembling and nausea are some of the signs and symptoms of panic attacks. Other times, a person will feel chest pains and feels like he is trapped and can’t break free.
If you noticed, most of the symptoms I’ve mentioned are serious. This can be mistaken for a heart attack or even a mild stroke. That’s why, never disregard symptoms like these. Seek medical attention right away for it might not be a panic attack anymore.
What Can Cause It?
Some people may have inherited their susceptibility to developing panic attacks as it can be hereditary. It can also be caused by an underlying medical condition or by the medications or medicines you take. Women are also prone to having panic attacks during pregnancy. And the most common cause is stress as it highlights anxiety and nervousness leading to panic attacks.
What Should be Avoided?
Avoid drinking too much beverages with caffeine; better yet, discontinue drinking coffee, tea or even soda. The caffeine in them can worsen your panic attack. Also, avoid drinking alcohol and avoid smoking. They can cause breathing and blood pressure problems that can trigger frequent occurrences of panic attacks.
Can You Overcome Panic Attacks?
You need to be medically assured that there is nothing wrong with your internal organs and your entire body. Go to a medical practitioner and undergo various laboratory and medical checkup. When you pass those tests with flying colors, you can be rest assured that you are physically fit and healthy.
When you keep on thinking about the attack, it will just keep coming back. Whenever you feel that you’ll have a panic attack, just relax and calm down. Assess the situation and tell your brain that there’s no danger.
When your panic attacks worsen, or before it does, seek professional help. Further, it is best if you have someone nearby at all times to help you deal calmly when panic attacks occur.
