Panic Attacks and OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder)

Many different forms of anxiety exist, and one that happens quite often is obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD. OCD is not really considered a major form of anxiety. Sometimes it is just dismissed as the person just having unusual behavior. OCD should always be considered serious, and anyone suffering from it should think of this way too. This is even more true when it is coupled with a panic attack.

Are you asking what OCD is? OCD is made up of reoccurring and intrusive thoughts. The person suffering from OCD is driven to do some kind of ritual to quit thinking these thoughts. These rituals can take many forms. These rituals come in many variations. The rituals can be reading, cleaning, or exercising done in excessive ways. These rituals can be quite a serious influence on the person’s life. They can start being the person’s whole day in some cases. They can alter an individual’s ability to perform normally on their job or at social functions.

You have to understand that some of the people, who have OCD, start doing these rituals for as much as 3 or more hours a day, this allows the people very little opportunity to socialize or work. This leads the person to find what help is available.

Because OCD has irrational qualities to it, it is often experienced with panic attacks also. The person can have a panic attack, if they aren’t able to do their ritual when they need to. When the ritual needs to be performed to chase away the intrusive thinking patterns, a panic attack could ensue if the ritual is not performed.

Trying to deal with even a single anxiety disorder would be complex by itself. But having to handle two disorders at the same time would be worse. But the good news is that methods are out there to handle the situation. Usually, when the OCD problems are brought under control, the panic attacks lessen too. In addition, the person doesn’t always need some kind of drug treatment to handle the situation.

A very successful treatment for OCD is the behavioral modification therapy. This therapy is successful through lessening the reactions individuals have to the different triggers, and this is what brings on panic attacks to occur and also the rituals to be done. These happen because of the connection to the anxiety disorder.

These sessions hold a good track record for being effective. So whoever is afflicted with these disorders, that therapy is out there that will lessen the effects that this condition puts them through. The success is dependent upon how severe the disorder is, and which treatment is prescribed. This is why each person’s case has to be diagnosed therapy individually.

Both panic attacks and OCD happen to be serious problems. But the can be treated quite successfully. So everyone who has these problems can take comfort that the correct therapy is out there, and give them good results.
