Presently, researchers are of the opinion that panic attacks are caused due to release of adrenaline when it really isn’t needed. The factors that cause the release of adrenaline seem to be connected to different states of the mind. However, it is still unclear why one person suffers from panic attack and another one doesn’t.

A significant amount of adrenaline released into the bloodstream is the cause for the manifestation of panic attack symptoms. Under some circumstances, when a person is facing physical danger, it is completely normal for adrenaline to rush into your bloodstream. This adrenaline is instrumental in making your muscles stronger so that you have the option of either fighting or fleeing the scene.

The adrenaline rush has survival benefits. Fortunately, we don’t face physical dangers as often as our ancestors did but the response is still there if we need it. Problems come up when we have this adrenaline flood for no good reason. that’s what happens when someone has a panic attack.

A person’s genetic makeup plays an important role in their life. If your parents or grandparents had panic attacks, you are at a greater risk of having panic attacks. However, this does not mean that you will surely have panic attacks. It just means that you predisposed to the problem.

However, certain genes lie dormant until a definite environmental stimulus triggers it to become active. For instance, studies have shown that lung cancer can be caused when cancer-causing genes are activated by cigarette smoke. So, if a person hadn’t smoked, his or her genes wouldn’t have become active. Similarly, it could be your lifestyle more than your genes that causing panic attacks.

Some life situations create more stress than others. For instance, an investment banker who works endless hours under pressure most likely experiences more stress than an elementary school teacher who who loves their job. Are you doing things to yourself that stress you out? Cut the double espresso a lattes, put out the cigarettes, get a decent amount of rest and see if you don’t feel better.

Your Particular Circumstances: Even if you lead a healthy lifestyle and do not have a family history of panic attacks, certain situations might trigger an episode. If your life is stressful for a long period of time, it is the perfect setting for causing a panic attack without any apparent reason. Even a small incident could trigger a panic attack.
