The Relation Between Food And Stress

What may cause stress? Virtually everything: an important meeting, difficult negotiations or a traffic jam are only a few examples of stressful situations. We have no choice – we can’t avoid them and we can’t delay them. For most people the only way that help them cope with increasing stress level is food: a bar of chocolate, candies or cookies. They do it unconsciously, but they still do it as eating is the simplest and very effective short-term stress reliever – unless you overdo it.

The problem is that while eating a candy can help you cope with a short-term stress, if you live under pressure for a long time, you may find out that your are instinctively seeking snack foods every time you feel stressed. Soon after you find out that suddenly you start facing even more problems because you eat goodies to reduce the stress. Your health suffers, you start gaining weight and suddenly what initially was a cure becomes worse than the initial trouble.

There are a lot of risky professions when it comes to stress overeating. One of them is a truck driver. While we do not usually think of it as of a stressful job, being constantly on the go, sleeping away from home and having to deal with traffic jams makes this job particularly prone to overeating problems. Drivers try to reduce their stress and calm their nerves by eating tons of snacks. As the result, they quickly get on weight and have to start another ways to lessen the stress – and to lose the weigh.

Eating food provides some measure of comfort and improves your mood, that’s true. There are countless mothers who have a candy or a piece of chocolate every time when children start fighting or when they don’t know an answer to children’s questions. The problem is that while it makes them feel better, it does not solve any problems: children will still be fighting and asking difficult questions. In case of long-term stress, eating is a short way to gain weight. A lot of weight.

The bottom line is that we can’t cope with stress only by using food or medications. The only way to overcome it is finding its true reasons. Whether it is work, cleaning the house or health problems, the stress can always be coped with. You are never stuck in a routine soi deeply that you can’t go out and change your life for the better. It is not easy as habits built up last ten years won’t let go in a week, but you can always win. Sometimes it is a slow and step-by-step process, but it is always possible to lessen the stress level for good without candies.
