<p>Being too scared to fly is also known as aviophobia. This fear can be crippling and get in the way of life. These issues can come up if someone has experienced a particularly awful event or find that they get too wrapped up in negative news.</p>
<p>Aviophobia is characterized by many physical and psychological symptoms. These include, difficulty breathing, muscle tension, sweating, stomach discomfort, chest pain, and dizziness. Some people even experience weakness, forgetfulness, and make poor decisions as a result of the fear.</p>
<p>These feelings arise due to a feeling of being trapped and having no control over one&#8217;s surroundings. Not being able to move around freely makes this worse.</p>
<p>Generally, people who have this fear visit with their doctor prior to flying. The doctor will usually write a prescription for a drug, such as Valium or other relaxants. However, there are other ways to deal with aviophobia.</p>
<p>Some people experience relief after taking courses about airplanes. These courses cover subjects like what an aircraft is made of and how it operates. They also provide details on how a plane is classified as being safe to fly. This can be very effective, but other treatments are available if this does not work.</p>
<p>There are also several kinds of therapy available, including cognitive behavior therapy, hypnosis, and systematic desensitization. The cognitive and desensitization therapies are based on the idea that a traumatic event has triggered the phobia. Hypnotherapy also relies on this idea and uses regression to uncover the event. These treatments can become costly, however.</p>
<p>If you are suffering from flying phobia, you don&#8217;t have to live with it forever. Medication can provide you with a quick fix, but therapy can give you long lasting relief.</p>

Some vacationers may take cruises if they are close enough to drive to the cruise line departure ports.</p>
<p>Ironically, even though air travel is about thirty times safer than traveling by car, you very rarely hear about people that have a fear of driving. Maybe the television, radio, internet and print media contributes to this fear when they graphically cover commercial airline crashes and the subsequent large number of air travelers that are injured or perish.</p>
<p>Fear of flying on commercial flights can be triggered by a number of concerns such as the fear of heights, the fear of falling, the fear of the takeoff and the landing, the fear of crashing, the fear of flying over water, the fear of flying at night, the feeling of losing control causing panic attacks, air turbulence, stormy weather, the fear of hijackers or terrorists, motion sickness, and claustrophobia such as the fear of being trapped in the confined space of an airline cabin as well as being packed in like sardines with your fellow passengers, and also other phobias.</p>
<p>Some other symptoms of the fear of flying could be mild nervousness to extreme anxiety, panic attacks, shortness of breath, a tightness in your chest and chest pains, clammy hands, headaches, and nausea and vomiting.</p>
<p>If you feel your fear of flying is severe, you may want to consider enrolling in an intensive treatment program. However, if think your fear of flying is not severe, there are some things you can do that may help remedy this problem.</p>
<p>Firstly, sit in a seat that is over the airplane wings, preferably not a window seat, so you cant look down at the ground. When you sit over the wings you will also experience a smoother flight.</p>
<p>If possible, leave your seat belt on as much as possible, so if any air turbulence suddenly occurs, you wont get jarred or bounced about as much.</p>
<p>Eat light and try to avoid eating or drinking any food or beverage that contains caffeine, sugar, or alcohol.</p>
<p>It will help if you try to stay positive and always think only of positive thoughts.</p>
<p>It may help to occupy your mind by listening to soft, soothing music on your I-Pod.</p>
<p>It may help to wear eye shades and try and sleep if you can.</p>
<p>You may feel less stressed if you can book flights at off-peak times as there are usually fewer airline passengers to contend with.</p>
<p>If you are thinking of taking any prescription or over-the-counter drugs to calm yourself down on your flight, be sure that you consult first with your family doctor or pharmacist. Keep in mind that if you are already taking prescriptions for pre-existing conditions, any new medication, even the over-the-counter ones, may interact adversely with them.</p>
<p>I have a true story that may help you with this problem. A number of years ago a good friend of mine had a real problem with the fear of flying. He was really concerned about dying in a plane crash. A funny thing is that he had no problem driving all over the country, or taking a bus or train when he traveled on his holidays.</p>
<p>Fortunately he started working selling ads for a local community newspaper near a busy international airport. As he drove around to sell advertising to the stores in the area, he constantly saw commercial airliners take off and land day in and day out. He heard the loud roar of airline engines every day. Eventually he started to lose his fear of flying.</p>
<p>He finally made a huge decision to vacation on the big island of Hawaii, which he had always longed to do. The only concern was that he had no choice but to fly. He then bought flight insurance in case the plane crashed. He wanted to be sure leave something for his mother and father if he did not come back.</p>
<p>Before boarding the airplane he took a sleeping pill hoping that it would help to keep him calm. He bravely booked a window seat as he wanted to be able to see where he was going and what the earth and ocean looked like from the air.</p>
<p>When the flight attendant told the passengers to fasten their seat belts, he cinched his belt up so tight he said he thought he would break it. All through the flight he removed his seat belt only to go to the washroom. During the flight to Hawaii the only thing that really bothered him was that his ears got plugged up and hurt because of the changes in cabin pressure on the takeoff and landing. A fellow passenger suggested that he should chew some gum and that seemed to do the trick.</p>
<p>When he eventually landed in Hawaii he was so proud of himself! After all those wasted years of being hung up on that debilitating phobia, he finally had broken free. All it took was working near a large airport and watching as well as hearing the constant takeoffs and landings of these huge commercial airliners to reprogram his mind.</p>
<p>If you do have a fear of flying you must try and rid yourself of this debilitating, irrational fear. Your life will be changed forever when you allow yourself to soar with the eagles and fly anywhere in this wonderful world that your heart desires.</p>

<p>The fear of flying is one fear that almost everyone who has flown has experienced to some degree.  For many, the experience is no more than a nuisance; a bit uncomfortable, but nothing to worry about.  </p>
<p>Others, however, experience physical and mental symptoms that can range from simply tense to outright panic.  There are many effective methods for dealing with the fear of flying.  What will be successful for you may depend on where you fall on the spectrum.  </p>
<p>Fear of flying symptoms often mirror the symptoms of other things that happen when flying.  Knowing this can help a person who has mild fear of flying overcome their anxiety more quickly.  What usually happens is that a person experiences a symptom and assumes it is caused by their fear rather than some other reason.  Then, they get more and more agitated until major panic sets in.  If the passenger can recognize this cycle early on, they can stop it in its tracks and prevail over their fear.  </p>
<p>One example is this.  Unstable air pressure in the plan can give many passengers inner ear problems, which result in a number of possible symptoms including prickly ears and skin, loss of orientation, nausea, and dizziness.  A passenger with mild fear of flying may experience these symptoms and attribute them to the their fear, as many are also caused by anxiety.  And this misunderstanding can trigger even greater fears and anxiety.   </p>
<p>Additionally, spending long periods in the tight seats in an airplane cabin can cause muscular pain, joint pain, and tingling from lack of blood flow.  These too are all symptoms often experienced during panic or severe anxiety attacks.  Therefore, the passenger who feels these symptoms may misdiagnose a mere physical reaction to small seating quarters as a fear of flying.  </p>
<p>Clearly, there are those whose fear of flying is more significant than the mild fear described here.  For those folks, mere recognition that the physical symptoms could be coming from other sources thank the fear of flying may not be enough.   But for some, this awareness is the first line of defense in combating their fears for good.</p>

<p>Over 1 Billion people flew on commercial airplanes in the year 2000.  There were over 18 Million flights and only 20 fatal accidents.  Compare this with almost 42,000 traffic accidents in that same year, and you can see that airline travel is much safer than driving by car.  </p>
<p>Nevertheless, rational human beings who have no problem racing all over town in their car every day break into a cold sweat and experience other physical and mental symptoms any time they are faced with the thought of flying on a plane.  </p>
<p>A critical thing to keep in mind is that, although it may appear that the danger involved with flying is the cause of the apprehension, that is probably not it at all.  As with all phobias, it probably stems from anxiety, which can be triggered in many different ways.  </p>
<p>There is very little that an airline passenger can control in his surroundings.  The climate cannot be adjusted if it is too hot or too cold.  If the surroundings are cramped, it is difficult to make space and you can&#8217;t open a window to get fresh air.  When turbulence rocks the plane, we have no brake or other controls to manage the situation.  We can&#8217;t even see and probably don&#8217;t know the pilot.  Contrast this to an automobile, which we either control by driving ourselves, or know and trust the driver personally.   </p>
<p>With such little control, all those things that are just annoyances in our real life become bigger than life on a plane.  Waiting on the runway our minds run away with the possible reasons the plane hasn&#8217;t taken off yet.  The close quarters become tighter and tighter until it feels like the walls are literally closing in.  A little turbulence becomes an out of control plane doomed to crash in our anxious minds. </p>
<p>While many are able to identify and conquer these anxieties before their conscious mind even experiences them, there are many more who encounter some form of panic when flying, which may vary in degree from tolerable, to uncomfortable, right up the scale to full out panic attack. </p>

What about those soldiers who bravely fought for what they believe in during two World Wars and other atrocities? What about that successful businessman who was extremely rich and retired from his own company feeling satisfied? They seem to have control over their panic, anxiety and fear, do they?  Of course, they have and no humans can&rsquo;t live without them.  But between them and the rest of the human populaton, they only have one thing in their minds why they succeed, they now how to control their anxiety.  Unfortunately, some of us don&rsquo;t have the ability to control our fear and instead of controlling this mental condition, it is the other way around. One of the most important studies about fear of flying was conducted in 1980. Two Boeing researchers found that 18.1% adults in the United States were afraid to fly. The also found that another 12.6% of adults experienced anxiety when they fly. That amounts to about one in three adult Americans were afraid to fly. Probably the most interesting part about the study is that it provided information about why they avoided flying. About half reported that fear was the reason. But, only about six percent considered flying unsafe. A more recent poll conducted by Newsweek Magazine in 1999 found that 50% of the American adults surveyed who flew on commercial airlines were frightened at least sometimes when flying or thinking about flying.</p>
