“You have cancer,” is probably the most frightening three words any human being can hear. While focusing on treating the disease, physicians have never considered the impact the diagnosis or treatment of cancer has on the psychological well being of their patients. We know it is a shocking and emotionally harrowing experience, I for one, never considered that it could actually cause post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in over 50 per cent of the women experiencing breast cancer.

A recent study is a wake up call to action regarding how cancer patients’ communication and treatment experiences need to be altered to minimize the risk of developing this serious disorder.

More than 45,000 women in England develop breast cancer every year, and one in three of them will go on to die from the disease. In the US over 100,000 cases are diagnosed. According to the Nactional Cancer Institute in 2009, there were almost 195,000 new cases of breast cancer (192,370 women, 1,910 men and 40,170 deaths.

It is more often associated with soldiers returning from battlefields who have been shell-shocked by their experiences. The debilitating disorder is often characterized by agitation, anxiety, depression, nightmares, flashbacks, and mood swings.

But now doctors have found that a similar effect can be found in women told that they have breast cancer.
The researchers that conducted the research theorize that many factors could trigger the development of PTSD.
These include the psychological and emotional impact of a frightening diagnosis such as breast cancer combined with the stress of treatment, including as surgery or chemotherapy, and the diseases’ unexpected impact on a patient’s life, such as patients having to give up work.

The researchers determined that women in remission (cancer free), can still have symptoms of the disorder. Their study looked at the effects of the PTSD on 331 Greek women treated for breast cancer. They found that 45 per cent of the patients exhibited signs and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Also the women reported that they were suffering from the symptoms, experienced a poorer quality of life, three years after their diagnosis and treatment.

The researchers, from the Panteion University of Athens, urge doctors to look for he signs of the condition while treating patients with breast cancer.
They acknowledged: “Knowing that breast cancer patients are susceptible to PTSD, it might be necessary for the field of medicine to create a plan in assisting cancer patients that takes into account the entire spectrum of a patient’s experience with the illness.”
In 2009, physicians reported that having a heart attack could also trigger symptoms of PTSD.

Approximately one in six patients, 16 per cent, met the criteria for the condition, while another 18 per cent suffered some symptoms of the disorder.

When soldiers leave for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, they are fit, emotionally healthy, and ready to serve their country. Upon return, they are faced with a number of health issues. Such health conditions include: loss of limbs, traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, depression, and a risk of suicide. This has resulted in a new awareness about the need to implement effective treatments to help these brave men and women.

The following is a list of common health issues and treatments for returning soldiers:

1. Many soldiers are retuning with severe migraines that is resulting in functional impairment. These migraines are often the cause of head injury and post traumatic stress. Many soldiers experience head injury in combat and are likely to develop headaches. The pain can result in functional impairment. Treatments involve medical, emotional, and psychological support.

2. A number of soldiers are returning with substance abuse problems related to the effects of combat. These soldiers are receiving free substance abuse treatment through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and their families have access, through Army One Source, to behavioral health support and up to six free counseling sessions that are not part of the official medical system.

3. There are soldiers returning with musculoskeletal injuries associated with combat injuries, poor sleeping conditions, training exercises and wearing heavy equipment. Chiropractic care is being offered to these soldiers.

4. Intense combat, the threat of roadside bombs, and multiple tours of duty has a tremendous psychological impact on soldiers. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions is a common affliction among returning soldiers. The veterans are eligible for two years of free health care related to their military service through the Department of Veterans Affairs. They receive medical and psychological treatment.

5. Many soldiers are returning with polytrauma conditions. Polytrauma is two or more injuries to physical regions or organ systems, one of which may be life threatening, resulting in physical, cognitive, psychological, or psychosocial impairments and the other functional disability. The Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) selected four Polytrauma Rehabilitation Centers (PRCs) to act as the principal VA receiving facilities for veterans and active duty military suffering from polytrauma. The goal is to provide inpatient rehabilitation treatment, ongoing medical-surgical care, and family support to soldiers with polytrauma.

6. Many soldiers return with a loss of a limb. A patient can receive a prosthetic limb. These limbs are now being fitted with microchips, and movement can be refined using Bluetooth technology. Patients have also been fitted with a ‘bionic hand’ with five motors providing a better grasp. Amputees often have more than one prosthetic limb. Rehabilitation and aftercare are a vital part of the work of the Defense Medical Services.

Medical teams involved with treating returning soldiers include nurses, fitness instructors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, cognitive therapists and social workers. Today’s veterans are returning home and having a difficult time returning to civilian life. It is important that they have access to the best health care.

With all the conditions that veterans face after returning home, a physician assistant job is an important and rewarding one. A speech pathology job is also one of interest and in which you assist all kinds of people.

When we are in this “fight or flight” state of being we become anxious, irritable, very jumpy even anxious. These emotions can reduce our ability to reason and to be effective when dealing with others. Our cognitive abilities can be impaired as our bodies prepare to survive when we perceive there is a physical threat to us. As a consequence we are more apt to plunder about and make poor decisions. Studies show that this fight or flight response not only kicks in when we perceive a physical threat to our well-being but it can also kick in when we experience a stress that is unexpected in nature.

Regain Control

There are studies that have been conducted regarding long-term changes in multiple neurochemical systems within the brain. There may also be genetic connections between how we process stress and whether or not long-term stress can lead to mental illness. Studies have also been linked to the ability to process fear when faced with stressors.

Mental health is considered to be as important as physical health and people will not be able to function if there is no balance formed between the two. It is therefore important to consider the effects of emotional trauma as this may lead to severe and potentially dangerous consequences.

The symptoms of emotional trauma are not that easy to see especially if the person traumatized does a good job in hiding their emotions. If your children however, have gone through an emotionally traumatic event, you should not let them to hide this from your eyes.

You need to make sure that they are ok and the obvious symptom of emotional trauma is emotional disruption. This means that the person can suddenly become withdrawn or excessive in their actions. Human emotions are a complex thing and chest trauma in the form of emotions can be hard to deal with especially if you are a child or teenager.

Learn To Identify And Help With Symptoms Of Emotional Trauma

Finding out about the symptoms of emotional trauma will make you more able to spot them when the trouble starts. Talking to your family doctor means that you will be able to give your child the help that they need by identifying the symptoms of the emotional trauma and it wont be easy.

Teenagers tend to be more difficult to deal with since they have most likely grown to being independent thinking that they can deal with everything on their own, but in reality are not able to. It is not always in the form of words that trauma can be identified and fixed, and with emotional trauma the symptoms and solutions can be through the actions. You need to be able to get your children to trust you and through your actions this can be learned.

The most common question we ask our children is if they are ok, sometimes however this is not the ideal way to go about it as they may become more withdrawn and hide away from the issue. Sometimes physical actions like a hug even though it is not always warranted, can be the most ideal one. Try to use less words and instead actually show them that you are there for them. It may not always be easy since people have become accustomed to talking things through and sometimes it is just better to listen and hold them to bring out the issues.

These kind of actions will need you to have patience and is one of the drawbacks when dealing with emotional trauma. You may need to wait and in some cases endure harsh words but is a necessity since they are hurting inside and are unable to find ways to make sense of it. It simply is not possible for you to protect them all times from the problems they will encounter in the world but if they are aware that they can depend on you when they need help, and they approach you at such times then you know that you have done your job being a parent.

Many people all over the world suffer from anxiety disorders and these disorders often cause panic attacks. If you are one of those people, then you know anxiety panic attacks can cause a rush of different emotions; each one more overwhelming than the last. To properly deter an anxiety panic attack you have to first know what they are and what causes them. This article is going to explain what these attacks consist of and how to deal with them when they occur.

An anxiety attack is a symptom of different anxiety disorders. If you suffer from them, then it’s important to understand what they are. An attack is when a person’s anxiety and stress levels balloon to a point where they cannot control it. They quickly begin to fear their surroundings, fear they are dying, having a heart attack, or are going crazy. It is a cognitive episode where your mind will tell your body it is experiencing discomfort that likely doesn’t exist and can last from one minute to fifteen minutes. Often an attack will cause a person to live in fear of the next attack, which only worsens the stress.

If you are unlucky enough to suffer from anxiety panic attacks, then you will want to know how to control them. There are several ways you can control your panic attacks no matter what the symptoms are. The first thing you should do is to identify if your attacks have a configuration. There is a chance that there is a stressful situation happening that is triggering your attacks. If you cannot hold off the anxiety panic attack, then there are ways to get it under control. The first thing you should do is relax. Your thoughts should remain positive while telling yourself that you’ll be fine and that what you are feeling is not real.

You can take the controlling techniques to a higher level in order to get rid of your anxiety panic attacks. You can start out by teaching yourself relaxation practices. You’ll want to choose something that’s appropriate for you. Some of the more popular choices are listening to relaxing music, reading and practicing yoga. Once you learn what an anxiety panic attack is and what to do to control them your life should be on the road to recovery. Anxiety disorders can make life complicated but with a clear head and a lot of determination you should be able to handle whatever they throw your way!

Millions of people deal with anxiety and depression each day of their lives. They are locked in a vicious cycle of needing help but not knowing how to get it. If you suffer from these conditions it can make each moment seem like forever. It changes who you are and what you wish to be. But do not give up hope. There is a bright future ahead for you if you take the time to know your condition and ailment. It may seem impossible at times but you can get through this. Click here to get rid of your panic attacks today.

When dealing with stress and its related issues, it is important to realize that some forms of stress can actually be extremely harmful to the body. Since everyone suffers from stresses of some kind, this is a big deal for everyone. Too much stress can lead to serious health disorders. This makes stress management one of the most important skills to have in the world today.

There are many different types of stress and some are minor, while others can pose serious health risks. Stress can actually lead to many other problems, such as eating disorders, sleep disorders, ulcers, depression, cardiovascular and digestive problems, as well as mental issues. Stress preys on the mind, prompting the sufferer to constantly worry about the pressures that they are under. This can be quite a harmful cycle because they never get a chance to relax or let go of the issues that they are facing. Most people face stressful circumstances throughout a good portion of their lives. Pressures about employment, money, family and many other things can cause stress in a person’s life. If not dealt with in a timely manner, it can build up to such a level that it causes serious health problems in a person’s life. Yet nearly anything can cause stresses. What causes stress for some might not cause any stress for someone else. The important thing is how you deal with it.

Stress can be treated in different ways. While the initial treatment is to learn stress management skills, in many cases it is not enough to see a noticeable change in stress levels. Many health experts believe that high levels can lead to other issues, such as depression and anxiety disorders. Antidepressants are sometimes prescribed for stress and its related cousins. If you suspect that someone you know is suffering from too much stress, or you feel that you are under too much stress, then it might be a good idea to read health guides to properly diagnose what you or your loved ones might be going through. The best way to live a stress free life is to learn to let things go. Of course, this can often be extremely hard to do, which is why stress management is a very popular form of therapy. If a stress problem is suspected, then be sure to contact a health professional for an expert diagnosis.

Stress and related disorders can sometimes be the trigger to much more serious health issues. Stress management can help avoid these issues, but not everyone knows how to do this. Sometimes doctors will give out antidepressants to persons under a great deal of stress. Since this is something that strikes everyone, treatment is very important. Health professionals are the best resource for advice and guidance.
