Learning Psychology Basics
Psychology is a scientific inquiry of the human mind and its processes. The way the human mind behaves has long been a subject of wonder for ancient teachers, that this study can be traced back to as early as the ancient civilizations such as China, Egypt, Persia and Greece. At present time, the way that the human mind is being studied has been more methodological and more comprehensive, having a qualitative and quantitative approach on studying human behavior.
Psychologists are the people who have chosen to practice this social science of psychology as their profession. Issues on human or animal emotions and motivation, personality, and interaction with other individuals and society are some of the aspects that psychologists try to understand. All in all, everything about human mind and interactions between humans are topics of interests for a psychologist.
A sub branch of psychology that a lot of people are taking interest in is personality psychology. Most companies employ the use of personality psychology when determining if certain people should be hired by asking them to answer a series of character determining questions. In essence, this area of psychology is interested in trying to understand the overall personality of individuals.
It should be noted that when a person is to be tested for personality psychology, there should be a complete logical picture of that person first before coming up with results. Similarities or differences in personality should then be checked. If there would be some similar reactions or traits that will show, then these are to be observed more closely.
An example of a personality psychology theory that has made huge waves in the scientific community is called Big 5. Human personality is said to be defined by the five following traits: openness, conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism and extroversion. Some people are openness and agreeableness combined, while some may be extremely on the side of neuroticism.
To be able to fully grasp the subject on personality psychology, it is important to check on what the Big 5 means. Extroverts are people who can express themselves easily to different people, while people who are said to be open are those who are easy to accept different opinions and ideas. When an individual seems to be too painstaking when it comes to doing a particular job is said to be high on being conscientious and one who is too friendly and is too helpful is high on the agreeableness level.
Neuroticism is the last of these five traits and is characterized by violent outbreaks of emotions that cause a person to have a hard time to mentally process things. Some traits that may not seem to be included here are a product of subtracting or adding one of these traits together. Psychology, as you can see, is very complex and this theory is simply a fraction of what psychology is all about.
It is exceptionally hard to ponder where psychology can be applied because of the overlapping connection it has to all industries. Humanity has spent years and years studying, analyzing and predicting human mind and soul. And as long as the mystery that is humanity is once and for all revealed, psychology will continue to be at the forefronts of studying man.
Psychology brings a lot to the table and can be used in all fields that have human input or interaction. Studying the mind is the basis of psychology, thus anything in the world can be a study for psychology. Some common applications of psychology are human development, health, media and the law.
