What is Agoraphobia and why Does it Exist in My Life?
Look in the dictionary and it will tell you the definition of agoraphobia is “fear of the marketplace.” Clinically speaking it is a condition that makes people afraid to leave home. There are different degrees of agoraphobia and so, many times people suffering from it are simply afraid to visit a few places.
Most times, agoraphobia starts with the patient being afraid to go to just one venue. Before long, he will fear visiting one more place. As time goes on, he becomes fearful of visiting somewhere else. Then, he will fear still another place. After this trend has developed for a while, he will find himself locked in his home.
Agoraphobia is a compound nervous illness. Its driving force is panic attack syndrome. The simple fact is, agoraphobia is not possible without panic because one who fears leaving home actually experiences panic when leaving home.. Simple fear does not impel one to stay at home for the rest of his life.
Without a doubt agoraphobia is caused by panic attack disorder. Without panic attacks, there is no underlying cause of agoraphobia. Obviously, when one sets about overcoming agoraphobia, he must first defeat panic attack disorder.
The first panic attack most people have comes unexpectedly and suddenly. The sufferer of a panic attack will always seem to blame the place the attack occurred on the fact it did occur. So, logically, he will not want to return to this place.
Unfortunately, a sufferer of anxiety is liable to have a panic attack anywhere and so, if the panic attack was anything other than just a rare isolated incident , the patient will have another one in a another place and he will then add this place do those he will no longer visit.
For some patients, it may not only be fear of places being developed. Sometimes it is an event that is blamed instead. .It doesn’t matter what type of event it is, it is likely to become synonymous with the panic attack in the sufferer’s mind. The event could be as high pressure as a job interview or as low key as Thanksgiving dinner at a relative’s house. It makes no difference if it a place or an event the sufferer blames for the panic attack, all that matters is the sufferer of the attack will have developed another fear of something outside his house.
Panic attack symptoms are most disturbing. They make their prey feel as though they are dying. Such feelings would not be welcomed by anyone. If the one feeling these horrible sensations reasons that going to an event had anything to do with them he will make excuses to keep from having to attend such events in the future.
The key to overcoming agoraphobia lies in visiting the feared places or events in small dosages. Panic attacks have been stopped from returning to the lives of many patients because they stopped trying to fight off the attacks and instead rolled over and played dead to them without resisting them in any way. An attack of panic cannot build in one’s life when he has no fear of them. So, letting them come on at will weakens their intensity at first and stops them entirely over time. Agoraphobia will also disappear once it has no panic attack disorder to feed upon.
